Cambridge gave a variety of projects that I could do, I chose the music video project because making or creating our own music video version of other artist song (this time the song is Time alone with you from Jacob Collier) is one way to appreciate the original composer and base on post production, it is to promote music video of our version. I decided to choose the pop jazz genre because it gives many choices in order to react (act) to a certain lyric, color palette, color tone, and this song genre seems underrated unlike pop genres where audiences listen a lot and by doing this could raise popularity for pop jazz audiences. For this music video project, our stars are both in the school age (17 years old) and it's targeted to a teenagers audience especially in highschool or university. Gender for both male and female. Song is about 2 people, myself and another star (Damian) liking the same girl and I think this issue is often happening especially in high school ages or university. But only Dhera, the one who approaches it. For social groups our target is for the middle class. It can be seen from our outfit and locations (place where it films). 2 stars have different personalities when expressing themselves and I do it in comedy ways. I'm an extrovert and this can be seen from our music video that I wear a mix-match outfit full with pattern and keeping a warm tone which is red and brown.This represents that I’m an extrovert person, energetic, but still a warm person. I add some comedy on my part as well, to show that I’m not a serious person (fun). Damian wears a soft color outfit which is blue for top he wears a hoodie, to give sense of an introvertness and white bottom which represents his personality as a cool person, he is chill, and relaxed. Other elements that have connotation to the pop jazz genre that I include in my music videos is the bin-bag with different colors and each star sitting in the chosen bin-bag color for personality connotation to the star. We implement jump cuts often for focusing more on each star's emotion when lip syncing, denote passing time (fast forward the scene) jumping one scene to another scene or location. We add extra property which is the dog and the philosophy behind it is the dog represents the girl that myself (Dhera) wants to approach. When “gimmie that” it means, the girl is only for me. I don't let anyone approach it and that is why I’m taking the dog in a comedy (fun) way. I show the girl that we talk about during night time with the lyric “the most beautiful girl in the whole wide world”. In that section, I use tracking shot, low angle to show the subject taller, zooming in, slow motion, and for the transition to day time (instrumental part) I use fast forward. The digipak concept is random with a mix of warm color tone (in digipak is the yellow color) and dark (black) which relate to our song. I became the model at the center wearing a sweater and digipak made by Sanjaya. We include 10 lists of other songs in digipak, by listing it audiences would also listen to those songs, not only the “Time Alone With You”.
There are a lot of things that I learn from this music video project. One of them is the editing skill using software. The software I use is iMovie to input the video onto it and the colouring adds extra brightness to it when the lighting is too dark. For equipment when recording, I learn how to use a tripod properly. For filming time, I’m using my handycam and phone. On my handycam, higher and lower the exposure takes a little bit of time, there is no shutter speed shown, just a plus and minus sign which makes it more difficult to balance it. As well as for focus, no aperture number shown to make it easier I make it into auto focus. Before start to film it, I learned how important the storyboard is, a list of location scouting and risk assessment. Learning this, will help me alot in my future especially when editing the audio file with video file.
